Women in this situation may be threatened with violence, divorce, isolation, loss of financial support, community support and can feel stigmatized and isolated. Women in long-term abusive relationships may lack self-esteem and may believe that the only person who loves or understands them is their partner. The role of a therapist in this situation is to support, listen, provide resources & focus on building self-esteem without putting pressure on the individual to leave their partner or demanding that they do so when they are either not ready or unable to do so.

We understand that the events of last night could stir deep emotion and trauma for people who witnessed through any form, the violence and destruction yesterday evening after the game. People may also feel insecure about safety in the city. In a situation like this it is important for people to talk and have an opportunity to debrief with friends, family or colleagues and get professional counselling if necessary.

We feel saddened by the fact that this violence has taken away from the fantastic accomplishment by the Canucks, they have worked hard, played brilliant hockey, endured beatings and made us proud to be Canucks. We also feel sad that the last few hours of last night ruined what had been a great event for the city which brought us out together on the streets, included everybody and gave us a lot to smile about over the past month. We hope to focus on the positive and remind ourselves that the violence of last night is not an accurate representation of this beautiful city or the majority of peaceful, caring people who inhabit it.
